Why are belt driven compressors preferable to direct drive?

What compressor to buy. Mostly to pump up tyres, but sometime to drive a screw driver or do a small paint job.

Depends on what compressor's for...

I presume you're in the market. Start with this, and read the posts, too, if you haven't.

The major advantage of belt drive is you can make pretty much any motor work with any pump, and usually you can get parts for the pump, if needed.

Direct drives are mostly hard to impossible to fix or replace except as a unit.

The advantage of direct is it's more compact, and therefore portable, and usually cheaper.

Good hunting.
