What if we find rust in the drain water?

1.7 hp 13 gallons CH with an inline water filter and a small 2 gallons CH,no inline filter, have the same problem. When it is not used for a long time, the water that is drained from the tank pet cock is rusty red. Also,it sputters out at drain time ounce in a while. Flakes may be?

Sounds like you are failing to empty your tanks before you put them away ("for a long time").

That's routine maintenance.

Rust in tank drain water
by: Bill

Salut Hermann. That's a tough one. Neither air compressor is particularly expensive, meaning that the lowest possible quality products were used in their construction.

For the tanks that means little or no coating inside the tanks, and questionable quality materials in the tanks themselves.

That the drain is plugged a bit could mean there are flakes, but could also mean that oil by-products and air borne contaminants have made it to the tanks to sift out to the bottom, and clog up the drain.

I guess the issue is how old the compressors are.

If there are concerns about the integrity of the tanks, and depending on where you use them, could you put the compressors behind a wall of sorts?

The cost to restore a rusting compressor tank for the smaller DIY air compressors will likely be far greater than the cost of a new air compressor of the same size.
