Tank not draining

by Richard

Hey Bill I have a 1971 kaguard air tank . The tank is a horizontal one I have drained the tank before from the bottom completely, and then turned it up and still got alot of water out of the end port. why is that and also my tank will build pressure with the drain open. It all works fine and water is clear (no rust )just wondering if I am draining all the water.

Compressor tank not draining
by: Bill

I suspect, Richard, that the drain valve on the bottom of the tank is partially or completely plugged by sludge from the bottom of the tank.

The sludge migrates slowly towards the drain and, when the drain is opened, enough will try to flow out the drain hole to block it.

This happens on compressor tanks that have been used for a long time.

If you can pull the drain plug completely, and have access to another port, I suspect a high pressure water spray might dislodge enough of the crud, and, with the larger opening with the drain plug removed entirely, you could wash a lot if not all of the crud out.

Leave the drain unplugged and the end port open for a couple of days after attempting this to allow the tank to dry thoroughly.
