Speedaire used as a vacuum pump?

I have an older Speedaire model# 2Z869 compressor, And I was wondering if it can be converted & used as a vacuum pump?

That thing is purrrty!

So it's a sophisticated vacuum bag pump "as seen on TV", only not.

Cool. Thanks for the info.

Check valves
by: Doug

I figured that a check valve in-between the compressors intake & the 3gal. air tank would help hold the vacuum in the tank.

As for the controller & 3-way valve used for the vacuum set-up, I'm referring to the type used for a vacuum press set-up.

More information & plans for several types of vacuum pumps are available from joewoodworker.com

The one I'm looking to build is the EVS Project.

Not sure why you'd need them - are thinking create a vacuum tank with a pressure switch, backward from a compressor tank design?

And you've figured out how to make a separator for the wood chips?

Sounds fun! Keep us posted (pix!) when you get it down...

I don't have the check valves needed or the correct copper tubing or brass fittings, But just to test it out I re-worked the inlet & outlet with some nylon (ice-maker) fittings.

Happy to say it works fine as a vacuum pump!
Pulled a -27 in.-Hg in less than a minute.

Vacuum Pump

" quote by Bill - You'll want to determine how much vacuum you need though, to ensure the pump is capable."

I would probably try using it with a small vacuum bag for woodworking inlays & veneers. Not sure of how much vacuum is needed?

Compressor vacuum pump
by: Bill

If the line to the tank goes to atmosphere, and the intake to the pump is what's pulling vacuum, I cannot see why not.

You'll want to determine how much vacuum you need though, to ensure the pump is capable. Pulling air from a closed vessel is one thing, pulling air from a vacuum cup or cups in an automated system will require greater vacuum flow.

Sure - just like 5Z668 only twin cylinder - so you'd want to tie the two intakes together, probably.

It looks like the same pump as the current GAST models and they will run as vacuum pumps, so most probably (but not guarantied), 'yes'
