Hello Bill. When I start the compressor, there are significant sparks around the flywheel. (I'll attach pictures)


The tank does build and hold pressure, but naturally I turn off the switch the minute the sparking start which is only about 2-3 seconds.

It appears to have something to do with the contact point behind the flywheel (see photo).

What do you think is happening? I bought this from a 2nd hand store and from the outside it looks to be in great shape.

This is the first time I've turned it on.

If it's not worth fixing, I'll just junk it but I love to fix things so I would love to save it if possible.

That is the centrifugal switch.

It sounds like the motor gets to where it opens, but then slows down and makes the sparks.

That suggests your run capacitor is bad.

Those round things with wires going into the motor. Test them both, probably at least one is bad.

The pump is direct drive, yes?
