Specific parts # confusion for 2z498 compressor

by Jake
(Umatilla County, OR.)

I rescued a speedaire air compressor from a friend of mine that was going to take it to the dump. It had been sitting outside in the rain for quite some time, as the piston had seized up and the head was completely full of water.

I cleaned everything up really nice, and I'm currently in the middle of rebuilding the compressor pump. When looking online for certain parts for my 2Z498 compressor, I am confronted with two different options of parts; 2Z498(A) & 2Z498(B)

My main concern is that I'll be ordering parts from the internet. If I end up ordering the wrong parts, I'll be waiting (and probably paying) for "shipping" to return, and again receive, the right parts!

So I guess my question is, what is the difference between the 2Z498(A) compressor pump, and the 2Z498(B) compressor pump?? The answer to this question could save me from quite the inconvenience, if there even is a difference at all! Thanks in advance..

I did notice the part numbers for both pumps are the same, and the second tier of the head I mentioned before is the "Valve Plate."(not shown in the drawing)

After finding the true drawing for my Speedaire Pump 2Z498, I was able to see that the gasket kit they offer DOES contain the Valve Plate gaskets that I need.(although the use of those gaskets are not depicted, hence my confusion)

I wanted to be sure that the kit I needed didn't conform to change as the pump design did, as I have had this problem in the past with buying auto parts for my truck.

Thank you for your interest in the matter and also for your input!

Good question.

Have you noticed different part numbers for the two pumps?

The only difference I see is the drawings for the two are different, but when you go to parts list, they are the same part numbers, just different numbers on the drawings.

Maybe ask the supplier(s) you're considering?

Crank sleeving

You can have the crank turned and sleeved if the main bearing surface is scarred. I had it done to a compressor years ago and it still works great.

Crankshaft - Ndl. Bearings Part#
by: Jake

I finally found my receipt for these needle bearings. The part listed below applies to the "Speedaire Pump 2Z498" and some other pumps that require the same dimensions of the crank-shaft bearings. Be sure to make proper measurements to verify if your pump is not the "2Z498" model pump.

Style - Open End, "Full Compliment" Needle Bearing

Part# - B-1212

Dimension(Inch) - 0.750" X 1.000" X 0.750"

Hopefully somebody will find this useful someday.. I sure wish I had this info whem I was doing my rebuild! Good Luck!

Hey Jake -

Did you by chance get an industry standard part number?

That number would be the best for people who need the bearings.

2z498 pump
by: Jake

Hey, I was browsing through the questions here to find an answer to my own, and noticed your asking about needle bearings.

I also have a Speedaire 2z498 pump which I just did a rebuild on.

The needle bearings are indeed very hard to find!

If you can get your old ones out,(my pump sat for 3 years full of water which made extraction a real P.I.A) take the most presentable one with you to an auto parts/machine type shop to match the dimensions. I went to several different small engine repair, refrigeration repair, and even vacuum repair shops with no luck finding them.

The auto parts/machine shop I finally came across tried to cross reference numbers from my needle bearings with no luck. Then as a last resort, he called one of their bearing suppliers and gave them the dimensions. Of course they had to be ordered, but the next day I had my two new needle bearings in hand for less than $20.00 and they fit perfect.

Hope this helps you out as I know the frustration this simple problem brings, and if you have already found them.. maybe this can help another frustrated person out!

Indeed. it's one of those things that's easy for some, hard for others, depending on what skills and machine access (free or cheap) you have.

speedaire 2Z498B

Yea, I was thinking about going to a machine shop but I don't think the price it would cost wouldn't be worth it. It's to bad, that compressor has been with me for a long long time. I guess it's part sentimental value that's playing a role.

...seems the main thing you have trouble with, if you can't find a used pump with good crank, you'll be looking at a replacement pump.

Unless you know a hotrod place that machines cranks from scratch.
