Model #62803 not generating enough pressure

This is a 21 gallon, 2.5 HP air compressor that can give a max 125 PSI. I use it mostly for inflating tires, air blowing/spray painting on my vehicles, sand dusting and my favorite act: using my new AirCat and a burly Central Pneumatic Earthquake for removing the lug nuts and debunking the myth that the fabled Toyota crankshaft bolts cannot be removed by an ordinary DIYer.


The compressor had been of great service to me for more than 2 years, esp after I upgraded the air capacity by adding 2 11-gallon air containers.

The compressor at first took longer to fill out herself and the 2 air tanks; as time went by, it started to do its job. Honestly, I had no complaints--until 2 weeks ago.

Started when I used the compressor to vacuum my wife's minivan after replacement of the A/C compressor, condenser, heater core, expansion valve, etc. In other words I was trying to fix my wife's minivan's hitherto non-existent a/c problems. Since the vehicle was 14 years old in service but is still running strong and well maintained by me, I decided that performing a vacuum after the replacements were a logical step.

But then, I noted almost instantaneously that the compressor was working a lot harder and that it was taking it a lot longer to fill the tanks. So I checked it. That's how I found out that the pressure was not going as desired and would only fill her supposed to 21 gallon capacity at 2 gallons but still keep on running.

In short she was burning herself to death!

Checked the filter, removed the filters and tried to troubleshoot.

Fixing had to be postponed as we traveled to Oregon due to my youngest son's spring break.

Came back the other day, put everything back, and found that although the pressure quickly climbed to 3 gallons, it just stayed there, and was a lot noisier.

Not sure if it's time to let go and buy a better and bigger compressor. Or to wait and look for a fix. That's how I stumbled into this website which is pretty awesome.

Sorry I have no photos but I hope my narrative was comprehensible enough for you to help me figure out what the heck happened to this once work horse of a compressor.

Hi Bill thanks for the tip. I will check it. But first up: I decided to "autopsy" the compressor to check what I may have overlooked. And lo & behold, the thin gasket separating the piston from the fins were torn! No wonder I was losing pressure. Now I need to check the other parts that you mentioned that I check. Don’t how where to get this really thin head gasket like material. I’m going to have to make a call pretty soon.

Thanks for the update.

The issue is covered on the troubleshooting pages, likely to do with 1) piston rings 2) leaking valves 3) pump gasket blow through.

Hi Bill. Sorry I interchanged the gallons for PSI. I meant to write that the pressure quickly climbed to 30 PSI but then stayed there without any pressure build up yet the compressor kept running. Nothing done but the annoying compressor noise which I know irks my neighbors.

First off, please provide a bit more info, as your comment that the Central Pneumatic #62803 air compressor "pressure quickly climbed to 3 gallons".

Gallons is a measure of volume.

PSI is the measure of pressure in the tank.

What pressure is the tank rising to, and once at that level, does it stay there?

You can also pop over to the troubleshooting page on this site, and have a look at the pages about air compressors that run and don't build much pressure, and that will illuminate the issue I believe is the problem with the #62803.
