loud noises on my 2 hp / 20 gallon electric compressor?

Is it possible that one of the pistons is hitting the cover plate of my 2 hp/20 gallon electric compressor? I took the plate off and ran a staight edge across the top (while piston was at top dead center). I noticed that one of the pistons rose a hair higher than the other. In fact, it cleared the opening and was about 1/32 above the rim of the casing. Is this enough to cause loud banging noise?

By itself, probably not.

But it it's because of a bent crank, probably.

If you're thinking the piston is hitting the head, you could run it a bit with the head off and see.

It'd probably help to know what kind of compressor it is, and maybe some pix. You'd have to start a new page to post pix.
