Ingersoll Rand P260 compressor cuts out

I have a p260 road compressor , starts fine but when u let the key back from the start to run position the compressor cuts out.

I'm pretty sure it's an electrical problem .

I have reconditioned the alternator , fitted new relays to the inside of the dash , new oil pressure and charging lights and plenty oil in the engine , has anyone any advice on what it might be ?

Breaker Point Ignition on IR P260

On the old distributed breaker point ignition systems when they went from 6 to 12 volt input voltage it boosted the coil output and burned points, so they put a voltage drop 6 volts to the points for run, and 12 volts to the points for start.

The ignition connects the 12 volts for starting then you release the key the switch goes to run, 6 volts.

If the run circuit is broken it will start and die.

Check it by running a temporary wire directly to the distributor from battery power, if it runs you need to fix the 6 volt run circuit

There was one similar to this a while back.

Turned out the oil level sender was bad.
