How many CFM from my Speedaire model 3Z406

Does anyone know how many CFM my Speedaire model 3Z406 compressor will deliver at 40 and 90 PSI? How about the capacity of the tank?

CFM gimmick?

"The 40 PSI rating is by no means a "gimmick" and definitely should not be disregarded, especially if you plan on using an HVLP spray gun."

Perhaps. But if you need that ten percent or so difference in cfm, you probably need a bigger compressor, or a continuous duty paint pump. Getting that extra ten percent means the thing is going to run continuously, maybe exceeding duty cycle rating.

No question... some is "lazy". The presupposition is that folks read the range of advice, and apply what suits. Single snippets can be taken out of context.

As to "lazy", not quite sure where your comment fits in the spectrum, Steveo, but thanks anyway for taking time to do so. Many don't.

40 PSI
by: Bill

Sometimes compressor vendors will highlight the CFM output of a compressor at the 40 PSI pressure as there will be less flow at 90 PSI.

Most folks are using 70+ PSI in their air tools, so the 40 PSI figure is - in my opinion - a gimmick.

The CFM page on this site provides a 'rule of thumb' guide about how much flow per horsepower of motor on a compressor.

If you review the information on this site about tanks, you will find the formula to figure out the tank capacity.

Guesstimate, and pay no attention to 40psi.

Typically, 3-4 CFM/HP (from motor tag rating).

Measure the tank and do the math.

Either the motor or the pump may not be original or working at full capability.
