Gas Compressor has hard time going into idle after filling tank

I bought a 30 gallon gas compressor with a Honda GX390 engine.

everything runs fine but when it runs for long periods I notice that when the tank fills up the unloader valve has a hard time putting the engine in idle. It also makes a sptting/shooting like noise until it finally put the engine in idle. is this a faulty unloader valve?

Gasoline compressor unload / idle

Quite possibly.

Is the unloader (getting) hot when this happens?

Does the throttle move to idle and the does the valve open? If the valve isn't opening, that probably explains the engine noise...

And if it's a heat related thing, you may be able to tear it down and find some crud in it that makes it stick when hot.

BTW, is this machine new or just new to you?

It sounds like the pilot valve. It's also called an unloader valve or an all in 1 valve. It sounds like it's time for a new one. I would need a make and model before I can tell you which one you need, but we have them.
