Craftsman 919.167802 Safety Valve opening

Hi Bill,

I have a Craftsman compressor #919.167802. When I start the compressor, everything works fine until the pressure starts to build. At around 70-80 psi, the safety valve on the intercooler tube starts releasing. As the pressure builds to around 90 psi, it's pretty much open and releasing the pressure so air won't build much over 90 psi. I have replaced the safety valve, but the new one does the same thing. Any suggestions on the cause of this??

Thanks much
Scott

Intercooler pressure

Well, the second stage is supposed to be sucking in the air from the first stage. If that's not happening, then the pressure gets too high.

To verify, remove the intercooler and block the second stage intake while manually turning the pump.

As you turn, you should feel a vacuum, and then with each turn the vacuum should increase.

If that's not the case, you probably have bad valves in there.

Good luck.
