CP 29 gal portable blew work bench power unit

Initial fill is fine, and works as advertised. When the pressure goes down, and the unit starts back up, it runs for a moment or two, makes a weird humming noise, and somehow sends electricity back into the plug, or doesn't ground properly. It blew the power unit on my work bench and the power panel on my generator.

Compressor power supply
by: Bill

Depending on where you read it, the inrush is 3 - 6 times higher wattage than the running wattage.

A 2 HP motor runs at 2,000 watts, so if your inrush is that x 3 or x 6, is the power supply sufficient.

Based on your response, I would think not.

Also, running a compressor with a generator is a common issue, as people think a 2,000 watt generator will run a 2 HP motor. It won't start it, and if somehow it does get going, it will barely creak along if there is no load.

Good luck, and please let us know how it turns out.

Ugh, Sorry to hear that.

If this setup had been working, then there a couple possibilities. Take a look here:

Good luck.

Great question, and it's something I've been thinking about the past couple of days.

The problem started when I changed power supplies. I'll try direct plug power, and see if that rectifies the problem.

The troubleshooting page has a link to info about humming compressor motors.

Did you have the same power supply and setup before, or did the issue begin with a new power supply?

I should have stated that the compressor is a CP model 68127. Worked great for two years.
