Coleman Powermatic compressor will not run

by Ed Falkowski

I have a Coleman Powermatic,25 gal, 4.5 hp 220volt compressor.

When I turn the compressor on the electric motor spins and the compressor turns, but the compressor does not start.

I have replaced the on/off pressure switch, drained the tank and pushed the reset button on the motor. Still does not run. Should I replace the capacitors on the motor? HELP

Has this *ever* worked for you, or it it 'new' to you?

Disregarding that, you say:
"When I turn the compressor on the electric motor spins and the compressor turns, but the compressor does not start."

Do you mean the motor runs and you get no pressure? Or that you can turn the motor/compressor by hand, but the motor does not turn by itself when power is applied? Or something else?

If the motor doesn't run, the first thing is to verify that the motor is getting 240V or thereabout.

You don't mention any sound from it, so it's not likely a capacitor problem.

If there's power to the motor, then check the motor plate to see if it's 120/240 capable, and that the connections are correct (do this with the unit unplugged.)

Let us know, please.
