Champion gas compressor has leak from head area.

When the compressor shuts off, I hear air coming from the head area and back through the filter. Eventually it will drain the tank down. Compressor does build up and idle down like it should. Just leaks after shutting off.

That suggests the compressor may be developing two problems.

Assuming your air compressor has a tank check valve, that valve is probably leaking allowing air to blow back out of the tank when the compressor is stopped.

That the air is coming out the air intake filter suggests that either the valve comes to rest with the intake valve open to the intake port, or the valve is compromised.

That air builds normally and the motor idles down properly may indicate that the valve is supposed to be open.
