Central Pnuematic 67501 = Hard start in cold weather

by Lance

In cold of chilly weather, I have a hard time getting my air compressor to start. I turn on the switch and it will run for a second or two, them pop the reset button. I have to continually do this for about 3-5 minutes before the compressor starts running. Each time I have to push the reset button, the compressor runs for a second or two longer. The colder it is, the longer it takes for the compressor to get going. It's almost like my compressor has to "warm up" in cold weather. In spring and summer I do not have these issues. The compressor is located in my unheated basement and I have no issues once it finally gets going.

Any help is appreciated.

See the pages on cold weather and air compressors.

If the start cap is getting weak, the added load of cold compressor may exceed the ability of the cap to kick over the motor successfully.

Or, store the compressor in a room-temperature location for easier starting.

What does your manual say, and what oil are you using?

The successor to this says SAE 30w non-detergent.

If that's what you have, you could try 10 or 20w.
(not multi-weight)

Just monitor it closely until you're satisfied it's working OK.
