Karl, usually, if a compressor builds pressure past the normal cut out pressure level, and the compressor does not stop, it's the pressure switch that has failed.

The C2002 has a basic pressure switch - one wire in and one wire out - and the power from the switch goes to the pressure switch and then to the motor.

Power is obviously passing by the pressure switch after the cut out pressure is reached, and I expect you'll need to replace the switch.

It is still available. Empty your compressor tank completely with the power off, Remove the cover, find the pressure switch (it sticks down into the tank) and pull it. Use it as the example when you Google 'pressure switch for Porter Cable C2002 compressor' and pick one that matches yours.
