Atlas Copco GA37 VSD has "thermal flash"?

by Jason

Two years old, it has 10,000hrs, oil has gone into the motor terminals cause of an oil leak,

AC says its cause of something they call "thermal flash" cause by high moisture content in the oil.

My oil analysis says less than 0.01% water content.

We found loose terminals inside motor and wire insulation burnt.

AC still says its out of warranty so its my problem.

I'm guessing its caused by the extra low duty cycle the machine runs during non production times, less than 10%, the motor windings are getting hot, day after day week after week, the oil cooled motor just isn't getting cooled enough due to the oil flow, the seal fails due to this heat build-up, AC have no idea, they are just guessing as the normally do. They recommended the 37kw and we were told 10% is OK.

Many other brands recommend a minimum of 30% duty cycle, saying that some other brands are happy to give 3 years warranty, not AC 1 year and you on your lonesome.

More than likely this is a direct drive unit (no coupling) and the oil seal is bad In the gear case. Bearings going out in either the motor or airend most likely.

How did oil get on the motor? Looks unlikely, given the layout of the thing.

Did a seal on the airend blow?

Sounds like he thinks it is not plausible and maybe wants others thoughts? Personally for the price tag on these machines this sort of stuff should not happen.

I'm happy to post this for you Jason, yet I wonder if there is a question you want answered here, or are you posting this just for information?
