919.165570 compressor won't stop running

I have a craftsman 5hp/1.7hp 30 gal compressor that will not stop at the regulated pressure. I replaced the regulator and the problem persisted. I then replaced the pressure switch and it still will not stop. Any ideas?

It's all good.

This machine's motor is supposed to turn on at anything less than 120PSI, and then shut off if and when it reaches 150PSI. Cutting off a little low (140) is OK.

The regulator is also OK. Its job is to reduce the pressure from the tank to whatever it's set to, like 90PSI. As long as the tank pressure stays OVER 90PSI, you get 90PSI out.

So, it's all working just as it should, except for cutting off a bit early. And that's not really a problem.

Have fun...

Regulator?
by: Anonymous

Strangely it ran until 140PSI and then stopped as if the regulator stopped it. The PRV did not blow. The regulator was set at 90. Bad regulator?

"5HP"
by: Doug in s.d.ca.

That's probably some sales kid that just multiplied peak start current times volts...31A. Meaningless, since the start lasts less than 1 second...

Surprises me, as it has one of the better manuals I've seen in awhile.

That's interesting.

I presume it builds pressure? Does the Pressure Relief Valve blow? At what pressure?

If the PRV doesn't blow, what's the pressure get to?

Craftsman won't stop running

Please start by clarifying the HP of the compressor. Is it 5 HP or 1.7 HP?

Also, what is the model number, please?
