200 psi Ridgid air compressor tire inflation issue

by Mike S
(Mesa, AZ, USA)

I have a new 3.5 gallon 200 psi Ridgid air compressor. I must have it set up wrong as it will not inflate my RV tires. Those tires require 120 lbs each. I am trying to top the tires off as they are all down to around 117 lbs.

So, the compressor fills at 200 psi, but when I put the inflator attachment onto the tires, nothing comes out (goes into the tires).
Any ideas what I am doing wrong???

I bought mine from Amazon. There are many others available elsewhere, but this is the one I purchased.

Thanks again for your assistance.

RV tire fill fixed
by: Bill

Thanks for providing an update.

If you have the URL of the tire chuck you acquired that fixed the problem, could you please add it as a comment here so that others may access it if they have the same problem?

Thanks again!

cannot fill RV tires
by: Mike

First, thank you for all your advise and assistance with my strange issue. The new high pressure chuck did the job for me. I had previously tried two separate chucks with no luck. Now, I suppose it could have been that neither chuck was up to the task of filling 120 psi tires. I do not know. But, I do know that the new high pressure chuck worked just as expected.
I am back on the road.
Again, many thanks.

Fill RV tires with special chuck?
by: Bill

It's possible, but in more than 35 years of fluid power, if that is the case, that's the first I've heard about it though I don't do RV's.

However, all other things working correctly, and no problem filling the car tires, then it pretty much has to be how the chuck is connecting to the RV tires, and that may mean a special one.

Please keep us posted.

cannot fill RV tires
by: Mike

I have tried to figure out why my compressor will not fill my RV tires, but fills my car tires just fine. I have concluded, perhaps erroneously, that the problem must be the chuck. So, I have ordered a HIGH PRESSURE TIRE INFLATOR CHUCK. I will let you know if that solves my mystery. If you have any other ideas, I am all ears.
Thanks

cannot fill RV tires

I tried everything you suggested and still no air goes into the RV tires. I then tried adding air to my car tire and everything worked just fine. Do you suppose there is a difference between an RV tire's valve stem and a car's valve stem. I cannot think of anything else.

200 psi Ridgid air compressor
by: Bill

Thanks for that info.

OK, if there is 200 PSI in the tank, and the regulator - which controls the pressure of the air going down the hose to the tire chuck - is set to 150 PSI, and the tires have 117 PSI in them - the definitely air should flow into the tires.

Adjust the regulator setting until the regulator pressure is set to zero, then dial it up to 200 PSI, or whatever pressure is still in the tank, and then back down to 130 PSI.

Examine the hose to be sure that there are no kinks and, with care, with a wooden pick or something you can use to push on the valve in the tire chuck, and NOT pointing it at anyone, push on the valve in the tire chuck. If air comes out, with the compressor off, watch the tank gauge to see if after a few seconds of flowing air the tank gauge pressure starts to drop. This will assure you that air is actually flowing out the tire chuck.

As long as the air left in the tank is higher than the 130 PSI on the regulator gauge, connect the tire chuck to the tire and monitor.

Are you getting any flow into the tire now?

Pressure setting
by: Anonymous

Bill, One gauge reads 200psi, which I believe is the pressure in the tank. The other (the one that you set for the output pressure) I set for about 150 psi. Does that help?

Quick question if you will.

What is the pressure setting of the air regulator on that compressor?
