what is the starting amp's of an 8 gallon 1.5 horsepower electric compressor motor?

I would like to use a portable generator to power the compressor. The generator is capable of producing 400 amps for start up power.

JC, how many watts is the generator. 1 HP = 745.7 Watts, meaning you'll need about 1100 watts for running the compressor, but don't forget the inrush.

I'm not quite certain about this, but isn't the inrush current triple the watts?

Anyone else want to contribute.

Cheers,

Bill

Motor quits..starts humming.

After pressure builds up the motor starts humming and will not build anymore pressure. When pressure is taken off and restarted it will build pressure. Motor is getting hot.

From what you have written, I would suspect either the capacitor or that the compressor motor itself if wearing out.

But first, make sure that you have clean power to the compressor. Any other appliances pulling power while the compressor is running, or iv you are using a too small extension cord, can cause similar symptoms.

Bill

hi again bill i have a 575 volt 10 hp compressor. if not too expensive i want to switch it to 230 volt as my shop has no 550v only 220v. what would i have to do. is it just a motor or do i have to change pulleys etc... or is there such a thing as a step up from 220 to 575 box. or should i just get a 220 volt compressor. many thanks!!
