In the engine or compressor?
Does it run OK?
Did you ever change the oil? When?

Air compressor runs slowly

by James
(Tomah, WI.)

It builds air pressure. I used it on 1 car restore.
now I have found another car to restore. when I went to use the compressor again I noticed it was not running as fast as it used to. It is a smaller compressor, I think 4.5 hp I know it is a bit under powered for my needs. But I do this for a hobby so it isn't used every day. I am miffed!!

James, not running as fast as it used to... how are you judging that, by the sound of it or that it's taking longer to fill the tank?

If the latter, see the troubleshooting section on the sitemap page, and follow the link to the information about air compressors that run but don't build pressure.

IR air compressor keeps building pressure, won't turn off- contactors?

I read the other comments. I have an IR aircompressor and called IR to order a new pressure switch.

The technician was sure it isn't the pressure switch.

He said the pressure switch only manages low voltage whereas the controller manages high voltage.

He said to look inside the controller (?) box to see if the contactors are black because the compressor is around 10 years old.

I couldn't see the contactors. They are enclosed inside a box. I am inclined to try buying a pressure switch first, and buying that first as they don't make the contactors anymore for this unit.

Any thoughts?
