Why does air leak through the air filter on the side of the piston?

When I start my air compressor it pumps up but air leaks through the air filter on the left piston but not the right. This is a horizontal air compressor approx. 20 gallon.

Howdy. The air filters are there to filter the air entering the intake port of the cylinder. If air is coming out that filter, then the intake valve on that cylinder is leaking and needs repair / replacement.
