why do I have to keep hitting the reset button on the starter

Every few cycles i have to reset the mag starter.
The hotter it is outside the more it happens.

Jeff, it sounds like your motor is overheating and it's clicking off on thermal overload.

Could be a motor issue, could be added load from a mechanical issue in the compressor.

Make sure that you've got a "clean" line in terms of power supply. Low voltage might overheat the motor too.
