What would cause an air compressor gauge to blow out of the compressor?

While trying to get the moisture out of the lines to the air compressor the gauge blew completely off of the compressor.

Umm? What air lines to the compressor. The air flows the other way. From the compressor to the application.

So I'm not quite sure of what you were doing but clearly you either over-pressurized the gauge, or it had corroded or something, weakening its ability to withstand pressure.

When you say the gauge blew off, do you mean the face of it came away, or it unscrewed itself and the whole gauge came away? If the latter, it may just not have been screwed in tight enough.
