What Wire size

What wire size should I use for 5 hp at 42 feet away

Good question, and one everyone should ask when they are planning on running power to an air compressor through a line that is longer than the standard cord that comes with some compressors.

Might as well get the answer from some experts on wiring and electricity:

Gage Wire

My guess would be 8 gage wire for 21 amp. What did you find out.

I didn't. You did. If that's the number that came up, go with it. 8 gauge wire looks like a good number. There is no down side in going with a larger wire size than needed, besides additional cost. There is cost too in using a wire that is too small.
