Norver, if the knocking sound wasn't there before, then it's clear to me that you have a mechanical failure of some sort inside the compressor pump, if that's where the sound is coming from.

This type of thing cannot be diagnosed on line. You should take your unit to a repair depot (see Repairs page) or have a technician come to you.
