The compressing of air generates heat. A lot of heat.

Your compressor is designed to handle that heat generation through heat dissipation to the atmosphere from fins on the compressor head, etc.

Heat generated by compressing air will transfer through the metal housing to the oil.

If the oil temperature is higher than normal, then you have a greater heat generation than the compressor design can dissipate, and that would indicate a friction problem to me.

Mechanical failure would be my guess.
