Have a look at the pages on this site (see nav bar at left) under air compressor issues.

Depending on where you are, the temperature outside, the relative humidity, the use time... your air compressor can generate gallons of water in the compressor tank each day.

That's why you want to drain the tank daily, or, add a tank auto drain you drain the tank automatically at regular intervals.

I don't believe you have a problem with your air compressor. I do believe you may not be draining your air tank often enough.

As I write, the humidity is 96% in your area.

Depending on how much you use it, you might consider putting the compressor in an air-conditioned room, especially if you already have one available. That way, at least some of your water would condense in the a/c, rather than in your tank.

Added an extra tank

I know, this may have been brought up before. But I have a older CH 2hp, portable, direct drive,20 gal unit. I would like to add it to a 40/60 gal. I am going to leave it portable and just quick disconect it up when I require the extra air. Will the 2hp handle the extra 40/60 gal or will it be to much wear.

Dave, if your air compressor is "continuous duty"= meaning that it can run continuously with no damage, then you shouldn't have a problem.

If, however, it needs to stop and take a break every now and again, (see Duty Cycle from the Sitemap) then you can get into trouble filling a larger reservoir with a smaller compressor.

I don't know if yours is continuous duty or not. If not, when filling the large tank, you must allow the compressor to stop periodically to cool down, particularly if you are drawing a lot of air from that larger tank while using air tools, and the compressor is trying to catch up.

Confused by air tank air flow?

I added an air tank to my 10 gal. compressor.
What I did I put back on the safety valve and added a water filter and a fast dis-connect after it.

My question is how can air flow into the tank and out of it at the same time? On the original compressor tank the air goes into the main tank one way and comes out via some sort of release valve, thus letting the air go in and out with 2 different ways (1 in 1 out)

I know that the air going in is working for the add on tank but for the life of me I can't figure out how it can go IN and OUT of the same fitting while it is filling up and being used.

I could see how it would work if it had the same release valve that my compressor tank came with. I'm far from being stupid when it comes to mechanical things but I just can't figure this one out. Any help would be appreciated

Ralph, your answer may depend on how you plumbed your tanks, and I can't see that to be sure.

Compressed air always flows to the point of least resistance, or, in other words, from high pressure areas to the lowest pressure area.

If you have two tanks of air, and you are using air for a tool, the air from both tanks will "hunt" the lowest pressure point, and flow to that low pressure point.

If your compressor is running, it is a source of higher pressure. That higher pressure air will flow out of the first tank and towards the lowest pressure point - in this case your air tool. When you stop using the air tool the compressor air will still pump into the main tank and into the secondary tank until the pressure in the system (that is, the pressure in both tanks) reaches the pressure switch cut out point of your pressure switch, and the compressor stops.

If it were me adding an extra tank, this is the order for the components that I would use.

1. Compressor pump pumps air into first tank
2. First tank is connected to the second tank via a tee on the first tank discharge line
3. The filter (if you have one) the regulator and the discharge coupler would be plumbed in after the tee to the second tank so that when you have an air tool connected to the discharge coupler, air from the first and second tank would flow towards that tool through the filter/regulator and out the discharge coupler to the tool.

Secondary Air Storage tank

I am plumbing my 25 gal. 5 hp. air compressor to a secondary 75 gal. air storage tank.

What I have done is placed T fitting in the working air compressors at copper line from the clyinder head to tank. from that side connection of that T to the secondary tank via copper line to the check valve of that secondary tank. That I am assuming is loading both tanks at the same time, right!

Now my question is can I just cap off the line out of the working air compressors pressure valves exhaust port or should I also plumb that to the secondary delivery line?

I would have plumbed the secondary tank from a line out of the discharge coupler of the air compressor myself, though based on what you have written, how you have plumbed it seems reasonable to me.

Draining the tank

Looks like you are on the right track. I don't know your model, but I suspect like most, your Speedaire tank drain cannot be opened to the point where the drain is removed from the tank... at least easily.

The manual handle will open a flow path from the tank to atmosphere, and should not unscrew the drain.

I recommend that you open the tank drain all the way, with some pressure in the tank, to do the most effective job of getting water, and oil and possible crud accumulation out the drain.

Drain valve

New to this. Do you just unscrew valve or does it come all the way out? I did loosen it and white foamy water came out, but was afraid to loosen too much. Speedaire model.
