VLL1582609 motor smoking after 30 seconds running

My 26 gallon Kobalt compressor (VLL1582609) sparks & smokes after about 30-45 seconds of running.

Although this is "direct drive" it has an internal belt driving the piston.

So I'd try to remove that belt and see if the motor will run no load, along with checking the movement of the the piston. If the motor still sparks, it's probably brushes. You may be able to remove and clean up the brushes if they are not too worn.

Otherwise, good luck finding replacements (it's likely there are brushes for it out there, but they can be hard to ID to find them).
