Using a regulator to control capacity of pump manufacture by Kellogg

I recently acquired an old (1953) gas powered air compressor that has a diaphragm type regulator on the air inlet to the pump.
It has a 1/4" line that senses the tank pressure.
Am I correct in assuming that the discharge pressure is controlled by the regulator limiting the quantity of inlet air to the pump?
A tag on the pump indicates it is a model 321 and I am guessing that it was manufacture by Kellogg.
Currently it is not being regulated in that it builds up to 125 lbs PSIG and the pressure relief valve opens.

Bill says...Dan, I don't know. I have no knowledge of this type of air compressor.
It seems strange that a regulator would limit the air flow to the compressor to reduce pressure. That's normally what the pressure switch does. And the pressure switch normally throttles down the gas engine while an unloader stops pumping air into the tank when cut out pressure level is reached.
I hope some of the very knowledgeable people that visit this website can offer some assistance to you. I cannot.
Cheers,
Bill
