Update on Reed Valve Replacement (It worked!)

Bill,

My Central Pneumatic 96447 compressor is operational again! Harbor Freight sent me parts 3B, 4B and 5B for approximately $5 plus another $7 S&H. Their customer service was surprisingly good; the shipping however was slow.

To remove the stubborn gasket adhesions to the metal surfaces, I did not have the Goo-Gone. I did resort to using a fine wire brush attachment on my drill. I used masking tape on the cylinder head, intakes and anywhere else I could.

It builds pressure all the way to 100 Psi now and shuts off as expected. Thank you for the mention on your site.

Sincerely,
Jason Antonacci

Reed Valve
by: Mike

Of coarse I expected failure but not in the first three months of using it. I have the same 94667 I brought the first one home and the second time it pumped up the gasket blew. Found that the top four bolts where finger tight. Took it back for a new one and this time checked the bolts. Sure enough they were finger tight as well. I torqued them down to 12 pounds. It worked great for three months of weekend use. Then the reed valve broke in two. So if I contact Harbor Freight will they have parts? if not where in the heck do I get a new reed valve and gaskets?

Pathetic!

Like many who bought this #96477 POS, I have the same issue after using it only the second time and then have to hear some mindless moron at Harbor Freight tall me I should have purchased a warranty; as if that would help make it run better.

Jason you would be well advised to completely dissemble the pressure gauge and note I said completely. Mine was full of corrosion and blown gasket material. Won't look pretty if spraying paint or lacquer if the debris even makes it through the needle valve. The inside looked worse than one I had taken off a 20 year old Craftsmen horizontal 20 gallon compressor for comparison.

Also, I found the glue or sealant which the manufacturer used on all the threaded parts of this model compressor is exceptionally corrosive to the metals and caked which contributed to much of the debris in the compressor and gauge. Truthfully, Harbor Freight should have paid me to take this off their hands. Their compressors are top notch crap. I am fearful the cheap welds or metal will fail and the tank explode on me causing injury or death. Surely the warranty will protect me from that.
