unloading valve doesn't close after replacing motor

Hi Bill,

I bought a used 2hp air compressor with 24 liter tank and replaced it's motor with an air conditioner 1.25hp compressor.

Now I'm having a problem with the unloading valve, it should close when the motor starts working but it doesn't.

Could it be that this valve is triggered to close by the pressure from the compressor and the new compressor just doesn't provide enough pressure?
If this is the case is there anything I can do to fix it?

Otherwise I guess I should buy a new pressure switch and unloader (currently the unloader is inside the pressure switch). Can you please recommend me the type of pressure switch that should work for me?

Thanks,
Michael

Michael, difficult for me to tell you since I don't know the make of compressor, motor, switch... nothing! :-)

As far as I know there are the Condor type of switches with the unloader inside, and then the rest, with a toggle coming out one side of the switch that pushes on the unloader valve pin to open it.

I have asked Condor for information about their switches so I could details about their operation on my site. So far, they have not bothered to respond, and the links from their site to data sheets do not work. I will try again right now. If I get info info from them, I'll have it up on this site in a day or so, under pressure switches.

Good luck.

Bill

It's pretty hard to help when you don't indicate what make or model of compressor.

Does your compressor pressure switch have a toggle on the side that operates the pressure switch?

Please provide more info about your compressor including the pressure at which it cuts in, and the pressure when it stops.

Bill

The pressure switch had been replaced already 2 years ago.

Just recently i had my check valve cleaned after reading your site as it leaks air in the unloader valve after shutting off and it's okay now.

My problem is the unloader valve suddenly did not have a pssst sound after reaching its automatic shut off setting at 100psi.

Without the pssst sound the compressor feels like it stalled. the compressor starts running at 70psi and shuts off at 100psi. Thank you

Rhon, thanks for including photos. It helps sometimes.

When I blow them up to get a closeup view I cannot see the port for the unloader valve. On this pressure switch then, I'm guessing the unloader valve is internal and blows out the bottom of the switch.

Your compressor motor is being overloaded by trying to start the compressor with air trapped over the piston.

If it is an internal unloader valve on the switch, I know of no source for parts to repair the switch/unloader valve. If this were my compressor, I would be replacing the switch.

Cheers,

Bill
