Sullair 185 loads engine too quick

by Cecil
(Piedmont, OK USA)

Sullair 185 w/ ford/Mazda 4cyl gas engine. Compressor always has been cold natured. Had to be completely warmed up before choke could be shut off. Open air line valve and engine would die without choke on at least half way. Working fine a month ago.

Now, Engine tries to start and gets up to idle speed but compressor is loading engine and it cannot get up to operating speed.

If compressor could be disconnected from engine, it would get up to operating speed.

Have replaced fuel pump, and plug wires.

Spark plug had some surface carbon but not really gunked up.

Took air intake elbow off of compressor and tried to cut off air intake to allow engine to start, but it nearly sucked my hand into the pipe.

In the past distributor, ignition control box, and coil have been replaced.

Have worked on engines gas, propane and diesel for 50 years and this one has me beat......

The fact that your hand got sucked says the unloader is open - or maybe just leaking - which it shouldn't be at idle...

This compressor never had a warm up valve. It always seemed to me that it needed one...

Sullair 185 has oil in air discharge line

by Randy Lane
(Missouri City TX)

I have a 2007 model 185, 635 hours. Just did a compressor oil change and filter with Sullair AWF. It has recently started losing oil into the air discharge line. I checked the separator and sure enough it was collapsed. I replaced it with a new one $275.00 at Sullair (ouch) and it still does the same thing. The scavenge line was bent when the the filter collapsed so I straightened it: however it does not sit in the dimple part of the bottom of the separator but just above it. I also checked the orifice and it is clear and the Watts strainer valve before it is clean and flows well. Anything else I should be checking? When these systems are running correctly will there be zero oil in the discharge line or is a small amount acceptable?
Thanks Randy

Same things you do if your car oil light comes on.

Check oil

if OK

Check oil pump

if OK

Check oil sensor (AKA oil pressure sender)

if OK

Change oil

if OK - done

If not OK, you may be in for a rebuild as in bad bearings or possible blown gasket somewhere.

Have you done routine oil and filter maintenance?
