Doug, I think this may be a gasoline powered compressor, though since I've never worked on one I cannot be sure.

That being the case, is it maybe the unloader circuit, to throttle down the motor, in conjunction with the pressure switch?

Check the PRV (that's what's blowing, yes?).

If it's rated over 120PSI, then it is defective.

If it's rated at 120, then you have a bad or improperly set pressure switch.
