it has been working fine, but then today it tripped the breaker, it is trying to start, but will not, i turned the flywheel by hand so it is not siezed, but will not start

Roger, the first thing I always recommend when an air compressor won't start is to drain all the air from the tank (a lot of air in your case, I know)with the compressor off, close the drain, and try and start the air compressor.

If it does, it is quite likely your unloader valve that is at fault.

If it does not start, please comment here and we'll delve deeper into the issue.
