Speedaire 4B220B not turning off?

On my air compressor I can get to the max psi and the motor will continue to kick on and not slow down the motor at all. I was wondering might be causing this issue.

Typically, if an air compressor reaches the normal cut out pressure, passes that pressure, and the motor continues to run the pump continues to pump air, that suggests that the pressure switch has failed.

The air compressor should continue to pump air into the tank until the pressure reaches the PRV release point, at which point the PRV should open and vent air before the compressor over pressurizes.

If this is what is happening, don't use your air compressor again until you get the pressure switch replaced, as it can be dangerous if the PRV should, for any reason, fail to open.

If the air pressure in the compressor tanks never gets to the normal cut out pressure setting, then that is another series of issues.

Please advise if it is the latter as a comment here, and we can address that if that is the case with your Speedaire air compressor.

Cheers,

Bill

hello everyone,

i just bought this air compressor for a $500 fair deal, according to the manufacturer it is a 5HP running, with 100% continuous duty, 21amp, 1phase, 2 stage, here is the manufacturer link:

www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/search.shtml?searchQuery=3JR76&op=search&Ntt=3JR76&N=0&GlobalSearch=true&sst=subset&cm_mmc=PJX-_-GraingerBrand-_-43737-_-Generic

more details on the pictures above.

anyway, here is my question:
when i took a close look at the motor sticker it does not show 5HP it shows "SPL" and on the compressor tank it show 27amp when it shows 21amp on the motor sticker.

is this a real 5HP? or did i just pay 500$ for nothing?

if you guys have the same compressor please let me know or if anybody knows what SPL means, please help.

i did some research but no one seem to give a convincing explanation.

thanks

Happy to post this for you Kal.

Wikianswers says that SPL means "SPL means the motor is Split-Phase, on the motor where you found that it should have two numbers, i.e. 120/240 SPL HP. Meaning the motor operates different given 120 volts compared with 240 volts.
____________
Kal, I believe the SPL refers to the motor being split phase. I cannot tell what the HP rating is. Anyone else?

Bill
