I have a Speedaire 4B227 which I purchased back in 2007. I have performed all the normal prevenitive measeure on it. Now I seem to have a NOISE problem. There is a loud rattling noise when the compressure turns on. It still turns on and off when the pressure in the tank is reach. There is oile in the motor. I tried tightening the black shield abround the belt but it still making this loud than normal noise. Any suggestions??? Thanks

Hello Lou: I can't hear the noise, so I can't be sure about what may be causing it.

When it's running, what does the noise sound like? Metal on metal? Clicking? Rattling?

First thing I would, depending on what the noise was, would be to ensure that there are no loose parts, and all bolts etc. are tight.

Tell me about the noise, by adding a comment here, OK?

Bill

Re: Phil, noise from day 1

I recently picked up a small speedaire and being an auto tech for 30+ years I figured the knocking noise from mine was something simple, possibly sludge buildup causing the problem, or a reed valve issue. I took the head off of it for inspection, I found little grunge in the head so I continued to the reeds & found one of the reeds was open just a bit. I removed the reeds one at a time cleaned all parts with carb clean, then 000 steel wool, I reassembled it with the only change made being I flipped the partially open reed over, other than a more even torque applied to the head bolts, a clean & inspect was all I did. I fired it up & the knocking noise was gone. I was blowing out some computer cases, went around to my garage to get a better nozzle, returned to hear the knocking noise again! The unit had cycled maybe 3-5 times to preset pressure. I still think the sound is a reed issue, the former owner said it had made that noise since he got it too. I'll be looking at it again soon, if I can find the problem I'll put the info up here.

Noise
by: Phil

I have a speed air model 3z323 witch has a knocking noise coming from the pump. This noise has been present since day one, some time in the 1970's.being an auto mechanic I took the compressor apart, because the noise sounded like a bearing knock.I inspected all the bearings and found no problem.I has worked fine for the last 40 years but recently the noise has gotten much louder. Any thoughts?Phil.

The noise sounds like a rattling noise. I have check the belts, oil and the safety box around the belts. Nothing appears to be loose or hanging. I even took the front part of the box to see if the bolts inside are loose. Everything is tight. It still reaches tank pressure and line pressure. Maybe a bad piston ring??

Maybe, Lou.

Tell you what, do a video of it with the noise, post it on You Tube, and I'll put the vid code on my site, asking folks to check it out and see if they can identify the noise, for you OK?
