The motor runs fine but it won't build any pressure. No funny or unusual noises. There is also a fine film of oil around the pump and on the tank. When the pressure release is pulled nothing comes out.

Henry, make sure you don't have an open line (ie: tank drain) while the compressor is running. Won't be the first time that's happened.

Or, your compressor might have a valve problem, with air sucking in and blowing back out of the intake port. See if you can feel any huffing out of the intake port when it's running.

Failing that, next most likely is a gasket failure inside the pump, with air circulating back and forth inside, and nothing going into the tank.
