Sears model 919.165230 25 gal air compressor, pressure switch good, replace start capacitor, still wont start, do I have to replace run capacitor also? Or is it the wrong start capacitor. The motor spins freely, any help out there?

Tough to give you a specific answer, particularly since we have no idea what capacitor you put on.

Empty tank pressure to zero PSI before checking further. Close the tank drain when done.

Have you got clean power to the compressor? Nothing else pulling power from the same circuit at the same time as you are trying to run your air compressor, and not using an extension cord?

Clean power and no extension cord, then try to start it again.

If no go, multi-meter the line from the pressure switch to the motor. Is there power?

Give us some answers as a comment here, please.

Cheers,

Bill

Air Compressor Wont Start
by: Anonymous

Air tank is zero, power is establish 126 volts from multi-meter coming in and leaving the pressure switch, no extension cord use, the old capacitor is a mallory 400-480MFD 165 VAC 52A103967-1 and 235-9851-03A these are the numbers on the old capacitor. New capacitor is a dayton 2MER1,400-480mfd,165VAC(VCA), 60/50HZ 65deg C, PSMJ400, E224674 . Not sure if its right. But compressor still wont start its a 25 gal sears, model 191.165230, ANY SUGGESTION

From the specs provided, it would appear as though the new capacitor has the same rating as the old, therefore, and assuming it's wired correctly, it should work.

When you fire it up, you hear anything?

You've got power to the switch, power from the switch to the capacitor, the capacitor is apparently the right one, and yet the motor won't start.

If it were mine, it's time to load test the motor, if there are no other symptoms.

Old Sears Compressor Won't Restart

by Jim

I have an old Sears model 106.175541 compressor that will start and charge up just fine fine. It cuts off at 100 pounds in the tank. However when the tank gets down to 80 pounds and the compressor tries to kick back on it struggles really bad and eventually trips the breaker.

The electric motor appears to be fine and the pistons move freely.

I have taken the piston cover off and it runs fine without the cover but of course no air gets pumped into the tank. It is only when there is pressure in the tank.

Could this be a check valve issue somewhere?

From the symptoms Jim, I would suggest that it may be the unloader valve not functioning.

Click UNLOADER VALVE from the site map for all details.
