Older Sears compressor just hums....?

by Dave
(Tiverton, RI)

Older Sears compressor, 220v, won't start when switch on at pressure switch. Just get electric humming noise.

This happens all the time. Pressure in tank could have bled to 0 since last use. Can sometimes get it to start by pushing belt (very carefully) and trying to "catch it" by switching on at same time. with cover off pressure switch, can see sparking going on in there during these start attempts. If compressor starts, no more sparking.

Dave:

The power flows through the pressure switch when the cut in pressure is reached by points inside the switch closing, and allowing power flow.

If the points are burnt, corroded, or failing in some manner, they can't close properly, are trying to, and the result is a buzzing or humming sound.

I also have heard that humming sound when the motor starter is failing, and it can't get enough juice to the motor to start it up.

I'd start by replacing the pressure switch and see if that solves the problem.

Bill

Older model 916531 been setting in garage never used just hums when plugged in

by Pat
(Kansas City Mo)

I bought this model #916531 which is a 30 gal horizonal 5.5 hp oil free air compressor from Sears. It has set in the garage for a number of years and never taken out of the box or used.

Sold to a guy on Craigs list and he says he plugged it in to start the break in process and it just hums.

I don't know what else he has done but mentioned something about replacing the fuse too. This is new why is he having problems? Please advise I feel bad because I sold it cheap but I thought it worked. Does it hurt for them to sit without using for some time? Please help.

How long is a long time?

The humming sound it is making suggests that the motor is trying, but cannot start, and the motor is overloading when trying to get going, and blowing fuses.

If the belt is removed, can the sheaves be turned at all by hand?

My guess is that the pump components have seized somewhat. They might be fine if the sheave can be turned, on the other hand, they might not be, either. It might be necessary to tear it down to find out.

Good luck,

Bill

Parts for 106.171142
by: Bill

Made for Sears around 1979 by, at least according to one site, Whirlpool? Most parts no longer available.

Depending on what you are looking for, there are options.

Please indicate the parts you are looking for, and see the pages on this site (use site map or search box) about parts that folks have made for themselves.

Compressor
by: Darrell

I also have a 106.171142. Just got off the phone with Sears parts central and found out that most parts for this model are no longer available. So it won't do you much good to get a manual for it. I think this model was made about 1979. All I need is the intake valve and associated parts but now I guess it will be going to the scrap heap!

Sears compressor - pressure switch will not activate while in use

by Chuck
(Cherryville, NC, USA)

Sears compressor - tank will fill to 120 psi when first cut on, pressure switch will not activate while in use

older model sears 106-175781 pressure / filter problem. Sears no longer carries parts for this model. Any sources of parts for this older model compressor?
_________________________
Chuck, if that means that the air compressor will not turn back on when the pressure in the tank drops to the normal cut in pressure setting, what happens when the pressure drops below that cut in pressure setting.

If the pressure switch doesn't trip to on, then it's the pressure switch that is suspect.

If the compressor tries to start and cannot, check to be sure the unloader valve is working.

Cheers,

Bill

Compressor won't turn off
by: Roger

I have a Craftsman 33 gallon vertical compressor. Model # 919.167320 It wont turn off, runs fine and builds up pressure but won't turn off. Could it be the pressure valve? I plug it in to fill the tank and have to unplug it whien its full because the on/off switch wont turn it off either. Any help will do.
_____________________
Roger, when you say it won't turn off, do you mean that the pressure in the tank never gets to the cut out point to allow the compressor to shut down, or are you saying that the pressure in tank continues to rise to the point where the PRV lets go?

If the former, see the page on why compressors run but don't build pressure. If the PRV is letting go due to too high a pressure, that suggests to me that your pressure switch is not working.

B.
