will start up and only go to 40 psi then it trips the breaker on my power strip

Martin, dump the power strip and the extension cord.

Plug the compressor directly into a wall socket and run it.

Did that make any difference?

Cheers,

Bill

pluged it in directly to a out side outlet that isn't gfi-compressor went up to 120 psi-released air to see if it would kick in and blew circut. then went to a gfi outlet outside again and works fine- tank kicks in and refills. one thing I don't like is the plug- beside's having the ground missing the 2 prongs are really loose- thinking I should replace plug?-------------------MUCHAS GRACIAS- Bill-have a great day

Yeah, definitely replace the plug, and if you must use an extension cord, spring for a heavy duty, 12 gauge one, maximum 25'. You are, I think, starving your compressors power supply by using power bar / extension cord.

Sanborn 3hp Magna Force Air Compressor tripped breaker and smokes

by Sabrina
(Wisconsin)

We have a Sanborn Magna Force 3hp air compressor. About 5 or 6 months ago, I used it to air up the tires on a vehicle.

A week later, I attempted to air up tires on another vehicle but the air compressor kept tripping the breaker.

We thought maybe it was a wiring issue in the house so we plugged it into the neighbors house & it still tripped the breaker.

So its just been sitting as we sort of forgot about it.

Finally today, my boyfriend tried to start it again. It did not trip a breaker this time but he noticed that the belt was running rather slow & there was smoke coming from the other side of what I think is the motor. Its the smaller "motor" on the air compressor. (Magnetek Century Electric part# 8-165730-20)

For obvious reasons, he immediately shut it off & unplugged it. We were thinking maybe the motor needs to be replaced but I was hoping you might be able to either confirm this or maybe help us figure out what else is the problem.

We are looking to sell this compressor & would like to either fix it prior to selling or be able to disclose the problem to any possible buyers. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if you think the motor needs to be replaced, would you be able to give me an estimated cost of a replacement motor? Thank you very much for your time.

From your complete description if the compressor issue, I would suspect that it's your start capacitor that is failing (the small "motor"). The issue is why.

If you empty the tank completely, does the compressor still stagnate on start up, or does it fire right up? If the latter, then your unloader valve may be inoperative, and that may be adding additional load on the motor startup, and that may be affecting the start capacitor too.

If the same problem occurs on startup with an empty tank, I would look to the start cap.

I don't sell motors myself, but there is a "store" on this site that offers electric motors.

Cheers,

Bill

goes to 135 lb and then bleeds air

sanborn air compressor goes to pressure 135 lb and then bleeds air to 80 and starts all over again

air compressor goes to pressure then bleeds air for some type of safety valve to lower pressure and starts over

Bleeding from where? If from the UNLOADER VALVE then have a read of the page on CHECK VALVES.

I suspect, based on what you've written, that a leaking check valve is your compressor problem.

Cheers,

Bill
