Safety valve discharges air while pumping.

Is this normal,it stops when it shuts off.This is a model 3Z492.

You say that it stops when it shuts off. At what pressure does it shut off?

If it is the normal cut out pressure, often between 120 and 150 PSI, then your PRV may be failing. Get it fixed.

If the compressor is shutting off at a much higher pressure than 15o PSI, then your pressure switch may be cooked.

Either case, your compressor is dangerous, and it were me, I would not use it until it was running, and stopping, properly.

It is very unusual for a PRV to fail, when they normally work based on a small piston area inside that's just big enough to open the valve once the pressure gets too high.

Try opening and closing the valve a few times to see if you can dislodge any contaminant that may be leaving the valve open to bleed air.

Check with Grainger or with any fluid power (air valves and cylinders) supplier in your town for a replacement.
