Regulator will not control amount of air received from air compressor

I have tried to regulate the amount of air pressure on the paint canister and it will not lower the pressure ....do I need another regulator.....the gauge above the regulator on the 2.7 gl. tank keeps going to what ever the compressor gauge is and keeps blowing off excess pressure air and then the compressor kicks back on again and again....any helpful hints will be appreciated ....thanks

Yup, sounds like you need a new regulator.

The regulator's job is to lower the pressure from the compressor tank to whatever the pressure is that your application requires.

Whatever the upstream pressure is, as long as the upstream pressure is higher than the setting on your regulator, your downstream pressure should see only what the regulator is set for.
