Our compressor is setup for start stop operation.

When the compressor stops it will not release the air from the pistons. When it starts back up to maintain pressure in the tank, it is with a loud bang. Is this the pilot valve, pressure release valve or something internal? Or perhaps point me in the right direction.

It does its job for 16 hours a day, just trying to prevent a major repair bill.

The troubleshooting pages will help, as will an understanding of the unloader valve systems on air compressors. All of this can be found on this site if you require it.

As a start, next time the compressor runs up to cut out, make sure that the unloader valve works.

If so, we'll press on. If not, that's the first fix.
