QTV-54 Surges on start-up

My 2 1/2 year old Quincy QTV-54 two stage compressor started surging on start up a few weeks ago.

When starting the speed fluctuates up and down until it settles in to steady running.

It gets up to pressure and shuts off correctly.

surges - centrifugal switch
by: Doug in s.d.ca

Try googling "single phase motors" - set to "images" - see pix and drawings on various sites on how they are placed and operate.

Can't give direct link 'cause it might change...

There is a slight chance a winding might be bad, so you can look for evidence of that while you're in there if the switch seems to work OK.

Caps are good

I checked the capacitors and they are good. Where do I find the start switch?

This can be caused mainly by three things, assuming it has worked OK in the past.

Start capacitor, run capacitor, or centrifugal switch (in the motor) for the start cap.

So check the caps first - you'll likely find them functional, but one or both weak.

If the caps are good, check the switch - might be dirty or otherwise intermittent.
