Pump seems to be working fine but it stalls the motor.

This will stop the motor instantly.

This will stop the motor instantly.

Two-cylinder, two HP, 20 gallon tank, Grainger compressor. It's been working great, all of a sudden it started to bog down the motor above about 40 psi. I installed a different motor (the 2 HP motor off of my table saw) and it still won't work, so it's not the motor. I can remove the discharge pipe from the cylinder head and run the compressor, it spins up fine, then the slightest finger pressure on the discharge port on the cylinder head bogs down the motor, and if I close off the port with my thumb (not pushing very hard, either), it will stall the motor. Seems the pump should be way more powerful than that?

I recently rebuilt the head with new valves, etc., and until this started, it has been working perfectly.

HELP!

Skip, any change in the power supply circuit to the compressor?

Not using an extension cord?

Did you pull and clean the air intake filter?

After these, the issues that typically might be involved are the intake or pressure valves or the run capacitor.

"I installed a different motor (the 2 HP motor off of my table saw) and it still won't work, so it's not the motor." Assuming that the "new" motor had capacitors installed, and you are not using the old ones, that kind of leaves out the capacitors.

So, when you rebuilt the valves, what did the rebuild entail?

Cheers,

Bill
