pressure (cut in) adjustment.

I run a mobile service. my compressor holds 120 lbs. when it drops to 90 it kicks back on. I want it to drop to 50 lbs before it kicks on. how do i adjust

Ed, the thing that controls the air compressor cut in pressure is the pressure switch. It also controls the compressor cut out pressure level too.

I'm puzzled as to why you feel the need to reduce the cut in pressure to 50 PSI?

Wouldn't the same thing be accomplished by turning your regulator down to 50 PSI or below? Regardless of the pressure in the compressor tank, your applications would then only see 50 PSI, would use less air because of the lower pressure setting, and thus would reduce the frequency of compressor cut in.

If you must change your pressure settings, and I generally advise against it, as they are factory set for good reason, then one of the two threaded shafts with the nuts pushing down on springs inside your compressor pressure switch will adjust the cut in and the other will adjust the compressor cut out pressure levels.

Cheers,

Bill

Pressure switch adjustment at fault
by: Kevin

Bill, thanks for your advice to others as I was able to discern my problem with my old speedaire 3z419 compressor was the pressure cut out switch needed adjusting. The pressure release valve would blow each time I used the compressor and I thought it was faulty but after reading your comments I discovered the pressure cut out switch was not cutting out until after the 140 psi of the pressure release valve. I had to turn the nut out about 3/4 turn on the bolt that holds the spring (which is under the cap)and that has now allowed the switch to turn off the machine before the release valve releases! I turned the nut in 1/4 at a time before I discovered 1/4 turns at a time that I need to turn it out. Thank you as I have tried to figure this out for a while and in about 30 minutes the problem is solved.

unloader valve?
by: Anonymous

If the compressor motor is feeling overstressed on cut-in, perhaps the unloader valve is not working well.

air pressure
by: Ed

Thank you Bill for answering my question. The reason I want to adjust "kick in" is when it kicks in at 90 lbs it puts a strain on the generator. When it kicks in at 60 lbs or lower the generator does not work as hard to get compressor going. I hope that makes sense.

Yup. It does.

Good luck with it.
