Motor will not start immediately?

Porter Cable Pancake compressor

Porter Cable Pancake compressor

My porter cable compressor is not starting immediately. I can hear the motor kick on -- but often it sounds as if the motor is "stuck." When it does this it trips the electrical circuit.

Is there something I can check on this?
_____________
Sure, a bunch of things.

Will the compressor motor and pump start properly after you have let all the air out of the tank?

By emptying the tank you are emulating the unloader valve working, and if the air compressor starts properly with the tank empty, the first thing I would check was the unloader valve.

Also, it would be good to know how you are getting power to your Porter Cable compressor. Are you using an extension cord? If so, try plugging the air compressor right into a socket. Power loss via a too small extension cord can lead to your compressor symptoms.

Check out the troubleshooting page for more pages of info, and leave a comment here if you have more questions.

Cheers,

Bill

This unit has a tubular pressure switch which is inserted into the tank.

It typically has a small hole in the top of the piston that bleeds air all the time, while it is compressing air, and then it releases piston-trapped air out the same hole when the compressor stops.

You will typically not hear any sound from the unloading hole.

Motor starts, stops, starts, stops, and eventually starts and keeps going

Porter Cable pancake compressor c2002 type 3

Bill, I see you directed this other person (who I think has the same problem) to check the unloader valve. I am having a difficult time locating that valve on my unit. Also, I do not hear the pssst sound the unloader valve makers after the motor kicks off.

What am I missing?

Thanks,
Nat

Porter Cable Jet Stream 5HP/20 gallon compressor will not restart

by Dave
(Matryland)

I received compressor from a family member a couple of weeks ago.

Initially compressor runs fine as long as it is not aloud to reach full pressure (But once it get to the maximum pressure it shuts off like its design to do) But when you start using it again and as soon as the pressure gets below I think 90 psi it trips the breaker.

This is where the problem is, when it is initiated to turn on via the low pressure it trips the circuit breaker (20 Amp).

It a Porter Cable Jet Stream 5hp 20 gallon compressor.

My initial thought is that is the pressure switch is defective or not set adjusted correctly.

Dave, see the troubleshooting section for why air compressors won't restart.

I suspect the issue may be unloader valve related, so read up on that too.

I don't suspect your pressure switch based on what you have written.

Porter Cable pancake compressor will not shut down?

Pancake compressor will not shut down and pressure keeps building. Please help
____________________
Is it running on and the pressure builds to the point where the pressure relief valve pops?

If that is the case, then I would immediately suspect that your pressure switch has failed.

If the Porter Cable pancake compressor keeps running, but won't build pressure past a certain point, then there may be a number of issues.

If you would see the troubleshooting section, and follow the links to the pages about why compressors will not stop running, and why air compressors keep running but not building pressure, you may find your answers there.

Please do post a question here as a comment if you need more help.

Tank drainage valve will not open?

I used my compressor last less than 2 weeks ago, and now the drainage valve will not open - I have been trying with pliers, and am actually stripping the metal. Any hints? Should I just buy a new valve unit and install??

Dan, I take it you opened and drained the valve when you used the compressor two weeks ago?

The reason I ask is sometimes the tank drain valves open reverse from what is expected, and by using the pliers to open it, you may just be tightening it?

Regardless, if you have stripped the valve handle, it's time to replace it. Good luck in getting the tank drain out.

If you do, consider plumbing the drain out to the side of the tank to make it easier to get to.

Bill
