C2002 not shutting off.

by Erik Pettingill

I have a Porter-Cable C2002 type 5 that won't shut down when it reaches 150 like it should.

I replaced both gauges, pressure switch, pressure relief valve, and even tried bypassing the manifold to check pressure.

The compressor still won't shut off it keeps going until the pressure relief valve dumps the air. Please advise. Thank you for your time and have a good day.

Porter Cable C2002 air compressor won't restart

This is supposed to be an air compressor with a "soft start" motor, implying that the motor will start even if using a lower amperage circuit or an extension cord.

You haven't said if anything has changed in your use of this compressor... location, temperature etc. That may have an affect.

Typically, when the pressure in the tank drops below normal cut in, and the compressor motor does not start, even with the pressure in the tank dropping to zero, that would suggest the pressure switch itself is compromised.

If you are handy, take the cover off, find the pressure switch (likely two wires, in from power supply and out to motor, and when this happens next, do not turn off the ON/OFF switch, but use (very carefully) a multi-meter to see if power is flowing out of the pressure switch. It it is not, it's likely the switch.

Porter Cable C2002 air compressor Not cycling on

Was using it in a residential home with a 15 angled finish nailer, when tank pressure got low it tried to cycle on but instead made a "hmmph, hummph" noise over and over. I shut off the switch on the compressor, moved it to a different outlet and it worked. Suspect too much current draw, as homeowner stated he saw lights in the house dimm.

Belt breaking
by: Bill

I call this type of unit a mini-compressor with the pump run by a small belt directly from the motor sheave, at least, that's what's in mine.

If the belt keeps breaking, particularly if you've just replaced it with a new, then check to see if the pump is binding.

It's not easy to misalign or have a too tight belt, but just check to be sure.

My money's on something in the small pump cylinder is pooched.
